Whiplash
The main character of Whiplash’s main goal is to become the greatest drummer ever. In order to do this he has to train and dedicate all of his time to drumming. However, the guy has also entered a relationship with a girl; therefore he is committed to spending time with her as well.
Whiplash presents a situation which would be a major conflict for an average person; guy deciding between his life and his dreams. However, the situation isn’t presented as a conflict in the film; it is just treated as another step that needs to be taken. It’s presented this way because Whiplash is trying to tell us that in order to be the best, sacrifices must be made.
After watching the movie, this idea dawned on me. His one true dream is drumming. So he figures that if he really wants to have the chance of achieving his dreams he needs to sacrifice everything else in his life. So he sits his girl down and breaks up with her. Honestly, I could see why a lot of people would think negatively of him for doing this, but I understand why he did, and to an extent I can even relate to it and I’d even champion it. Every minute that he spends with this girl is a minute that he could be practicing his drumming, inching closer and closer to his dreams.
The movie doesn’t even show any scenes or instances of the character making up his mind on the issue or even thinking about it beforehand. Out of nowhere he ends his relationship with his partner, and you can tell in his voice and demeanor that he is serious and completely sure of himself. Life is what’s holding him back.
As a young man myself, I completely relate with this character. Although I may not have such clear aspirations as he, I can understand where he is coming from. As you grow up, your life becomes riddled with distractions. Coupled with the fact that not many people are so sure of themselves and confident in their abilities; it’s no wonder that many people have no idea what their future holds for them. It’s a real inspiration as a young man to see another young dude up on the big screen that knows what he wants, takes charge and fights tooth and nail for the opportunity to achieve his dreams, even if that means giving up all the relationships or “distractions” that plague his normal life.
This scene really cemented in the message that in order to become the best, you have to give up everything. You can’t half-ass it; achieving these kinds of goals means complete dedication. You have to have tunnel vision for it, you have to be hungry and most of all I believe that having a strong will is the most crucial trait for all who wish to do so. The main character of Whiplash understands this and acts immediately, which I felt was truly inspiring.
